Are you one of those people who prefer to work or study while listening to music? A lot of people like to play overhead music while studying or working because it keeps them awake. It stimulates their cognition thus helping them to sustain the energy and focus that they need in order to fulfill a certain task. However, the background music that should be played while studying or working should not be too cognitively consuming. It should just be enough to sustain a person’s attention or focus. There are various elements of a music that should be considered if you want to listen to a music that will help you to increase your work performance. One of the most important elements of music is the tempo. The tempo is the beat of the music. If you are engaging to a rhythmic task like those of the factory workers, it would be better to play a background music that coincides with the beat of the task.
People who are studying should only play music that has a tempo that is within the range of 70-110 beats per minute. It is best to play on hold music that has a tempo that is slightly higher than the persons’ heart beat at rest. If it is lesser than the listener’s heartbeat, it will just cause the person’s heartbeat to lessen and thus fail to stimulate the brain centers to work. If the tempo is too fats, it could over stimulate the brain center thus consuming a large part of the brain and thus can decrease one’s attention.
